Mobile Wallet - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does a mobile wallet work?
    • Start by downloading the mobile app of your choice onto your smartphone or other compatible device. Then, load the card information you want to store, from debit and credit cards to loyalty cards and even coupons. In this case, your Equitable Mastercard Debit Card!
      • Before linking your Equitable Mastercard, be sure to call your local branch or our toll free number (1-877-652-6522) and verify if we have the correct phone number(s) and address linked to your card.
        • You will not be able to complete the setup if the contact information we have for you is not correct and you may have to wait up to 60 days to be able to use your mobile wallet if we do not have a phone number linked to your Equitable Mastercard.
    • Once you complete the setup, the wallet will send you a one-time authentication code that you must enter into the wallet to activate your token to be able to make transactions with your mobile wallet. **Do not share this code with ANYONE!** If a fraudster gets this code and your card information, they can load it into a mobile wallet of their own and go on a shopping spree!
    • Make sure you turn on the Near-Field Communication (NFC) option in your phone's setting as well. The easiest way to find this setting is to search for "NFC" in your settings app on your phone.
    • When you want to make a purchase with your mobile wallet, you can either:
      • Choose your app and select a card at the checkout screen when you're shopping online with your smartphone.
      • Tap your phone to a digital payment-enabled terminal at participating merchants when checking out. Mobile wallets use a Near-Field Communication (NFC) chip which is the same technology that lets you use contactless payment to pay with a physical card.
        • It is recommended you hold your phone 6" away from the sensor on the terminal for optimum use.
    • If you have issues using your mobile wallet, there could be several possibilities as to why:
      • The merchant does not support mobile wallet and/or contactless transactions
      • The address that you setup your mobile wallet with does not match the address that is linked to your Equitable Mastercard Debit Card
      • You do not have enough funds to complete the transaction
      • The terminal malfunctioned
  • Are mobile wallets secure?
    • Information that you upload to a mobile wallet gets encrypted, making it potentially safer than carrying physical cards with you. Also, you phone's built in screen lock adds another level of security to each transaction.
    • One security concern when using a mobile wallet is losing your phone or having it stolen. That is why it is smart to use something like two-factor authentication, which could include setting up a personal identification number or a fingerprint requirement to unlock your phone.
    • You can also protect your data by installing apps that will help you locate your phone if you lose it or remotely wipe the data so a thief cannot access sensitive information or use your mobile wallet. If you see any suspicious or unauthorized charges on your account(s), you should immediately change your password and call your bank to let them know.
    • Mobile payments offer enhanced security features. When you set up your digital wallet, your account information is not stored on your device. Each card is assigned a virtual card number that is only associated with the digital wallet and mobile device you use. Don't stress if you lose track of your phone - all digital wallet transactions required the verification you set up, like a fingerprint scan, code, or pattern.
  • Beware of social engineering scams
    • There is a scam where fraudsters will spoof the banks phone number and call customers posing as bank employees. They ask for your full card information, set up a mobile wallet on their device, and then when the customer receives the one-time passcode (OTP) they ask for it so they can activate their token. This effectively gives the scammer a working mobile wallet attached to the customer's debit card. Be very careful! Equitable will NEVER ask you for your full card number or for your passcode for your mobile wallet!!
  • Multiple Mobile Wallets on the same device is not advised
    • You can install multiple mobile wallets on your phone if you choose to, but most people only install one. Having multiple wallets on the same device can cause issues.
    • One example is if you own a Samsung phone, you have the option of using either Samsung Pay or Google Pay, but we have found if you install and setup both of these wallets on the same device, there are issues, as the phone cannot distinguish which wallet it should use.
